Never Stop Asking

O my body, make of me always a man who questions!

This is the final line of Black Skin, White Masks, published in 1952 when Fanon was a young psychiatrist in France, the book itself born from his own experience of being reduced to an object under the colonizer's gaze. Rather than close with a political program, he turns inward and addresses his own body directly, asking it to keep him restless and unfinished rather than settled into any fixed identity assigned by others. It is a rare moment of quiet in a book largely about the violence of being watched and named. Before facing that world again, he steadies himself alone, with one plain request: stay a question, not an answer.
