Hard To Believe
Evolution loves death more than it loves you or me.
This line appears in the 'Fecundity' chapter of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, written during Dillard's year of close watching along a Virginia creek in the early 1970s. She had just spent pages cataloguing the staggering surplus nature produces, thousands of eggs and insects and fish, most of which will never reach maturity. Facing that arithmetic, she states the hardest fact of the natural world plainly: individual survival was never the point, death is built into the design. For anyone carrying grief, the line offers no comfort exactly, but it names something true, that loss is not a personal failure or a strange interruption, it is the shape life has always taken.
Reflection
Dillard describes death as woven into the design of life, not an exception to it. What is something I already have today that I might one day grieve losing?
