Free Your Oppressor Too

This, then, is the great humanistic and historical task of the oppressed: to liberate themselves and their oppressors as well.

Freire wrote this while exiled from Brazil after the 1964 military coup, which ended his work teaching poor and illiterate farmers to read and claim their political voice. He had watched oppression harden people on both sides, and he warned that if the oppressed simply seized power for themselves, they would only become new oppressors. True liberation, he argued, had to free the oppressor from that role too, not just punish or replace them. That idea is forgiveness in different clothing: release the other person from the part they played, so neither of you stays trapped in it.
