The God Who Dreams

Man is a god when he dreams, a beggar when he thinks.

Hölderlin wrote these words in Hyperion, the novel he composed during his restless years in Frankfurt and Homburg, while he was falling deeply and hopelessly in love with Susette Gontard, the woman he called Diotima. He was a poet torn between the boundless world he imagined for Greece and himself, and the cramped, watchful life Germany actually offered him. The line captures that tension exactly: the moment we dream or create, we feel whole and limitless, but the moment we start calculating and second-guessing, we shrink into something smaller than we are. It still names a real choice we face each day, between the self that acts freely and the self that talks itself out of everything.

Reflection

Hölderlin drew a sharp line between the self that dreams boldly and the self that shrinks under too much thinking. What dream am I ready to act on today instead of just examining it?
