The Cost Of Comfort

The civilized man has built a coach, but has lost the use of his feet.

Emerson published this line in Self-Reliance, the centerpiece of his 1841 First Series of essays, written as New England rushed into railroads, factories, and the first wave of industrial convenience. He watched neighbors trade the calluses of hard-won skill for the ease of machines and worried that with every device gained, some living capacity quietly disappeared. He was not against progress itself but against the trade being made without notice, comfort bought at the price of self-reliance. His warning still fits a world of apps and assistants that now do for us what we once did for ourselves.
