Face The Only Fact

Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, which is the only fact we have.

Baldwin wrote this in 1963, in the middle of the civil rights struggle and his own break with the Harlem church he had once preached in. He watched people build entire systems—religion, nationalism, race—as ways to avoid facing the one truth every person shares: that life ends. For Baldwin, that avoidance was the real trouble, because it kept people from living honestly in the time they actually had. The line still cuts through the noise, asking the reader to stop hiding behind distraction and deal with the day that is actually in front of them.
