Morning Meditation

To live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want to get there.

— Kofi Annan, Interventions: A Life in War and Peace

Kofi Annan wrote these words reflecting on decades of navigating some of the world's most violent conflicts as UN Secretary-General. He had sat across from dictators, mediated genocides, and watched diplomacy fail in real time. What he kept returning to was this: cruelty and indifference are rarely random — they come from people who have lost clarity about their own values. For Annan, love and compassion were not feelings but choices, and choices require knowing yourself well enough to make them deliberately.

Reflection

Think about a specific person you have been avoiding or dismissing lately. What would you choose differently toward them if you were clear about the kind of person you want to be?
