The Perfect Teacher

This very moment is the perfect teacher, and lucky for us, it's with us wherever we are.

Ajahn Chah founded forest monasteries in Thailand and taught Western students through plain, direct images rather than complicated doctrine. Speaking from decades of monastic life, he insisted that awakening is not found in books or distant future states but in the ordinary life unfolding right now. This passage names the present moment itself as the teacher, always in session, never requiring travel or special conditions to reach it. In the wider Eastern Wisdom tradition, a monk told to wash a bowl is taught to simply wash the bowl, since mind and body sharing one place turns a chore into complete practice. Present-moment awareness means meeting this instant exactly as it is, letting a meal, a walk, or a breath teach whatever there is to learn.

Reflection

Ajahn Chah taught that the present moment is always the teacher, ready wherever one stands. What ordinary task today can I meet with my full attention?
