The Wealth Of Enough
Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich.
Lao Tzu is the semi-legendary sage credited with the Tao Te Ching, a text written for rulers and seekers navigating a world of constant striving and competition for status. In this passage he ranks four kinds of achievement: knowing others, knowing yourself, mastering others, and mastering yourself. The final line lands on contentment as the truest form of wealth, higher than conquest or accumulation. In the Taoist tradition, Knowing What Is Enough is a discipline of the mind as much as a fact about possessions; desire naturally expands to fill whatever room it is given, so contentment must be cultivated through simplicity and attention rather than found by acquiring more. Practitioners return to this teaching daily, checking whether their wants are growing faster than their needs.
Reflection
Lao Tzu measures wealth by contentment rather than by what one owns. What is one thing I already have enough of today?
