No Separate Watcher
The observer is the observed.
J. Krishnamurti was a philosopher and teacher who spent decades rejecting gurus, rituals, and fixed doctrines, insisting that truth is found only through direct self-observation rather than borrowed belief. In this line from Freedom from the Known he points out that the part of us watching a thought or emotion is not a separate, permanent self standing apart from it — it is made of the same passing material. This dismantles the ordinary sense that there is a fixed judge inside us reviewing experience from a safe distance. Eastern traditions describe this discovery as non-self: what we call "I" is a shifting activity of noticing, naming, and reacting, not a solid thing that observation happens to. Practicing this means watching a feeling arise without rushing to decide it belongs to a permanent "me," letting the watching and the watched be one single movement.
Reflection
Krishnamurti taught that the one who watches thought is not separate from the thought. What feeling can I watch today without deciding it defines me?
