You Are That

That which is the subtle essence, this whole world has for its Self. That is the True. That is the Self. That art thou, Svetaketu.

This line comes from the Chandogya Upanishad, one of the oldest Vedic texts, likely composed around the seventh century BCE. In it, the sage Uddalaka Aruni teaches his son Svetaketu through everyday images — salt dissolved invisibly in water, the unseen life hidden inside a banyan seed — to show that everything visible rises from a single subtle essence. The refrain that art thou declares that the self is not a separate fragment moving through a foreign world; it shares the very substance of everything it touches. Vedantic practice builds directly on this recognition: to trace the threads of dependence running through any single thing — the rain in the rice, the labor in the cloth, the whole hidden web holding up an ordinary morning — is to see the self reflected everywhere. Knowing oneself, in this teaching, means knowing how deeply one is already woven into everything else.

Reflection

The Upanishads teach that the self and the world share one essence, not two separate things. Looking at the coffee in my hand right now, whose hands and effort brought it here?
