See Clearly, Turn Away

All conditioned things are impermanent — when one sees this with wisdom, one turns away from suffering. This is the path of purification.

This verse comes from the Dhammapada, a collection of the Buddha's core teachings preserved in the Pali Canon and recited by monks and laypeople for over two thousand years. The Buddha lived in a time of intense religious searching in ancient India, and his central insight was that clinging to what changes — bodies, relationships, moods, achievements — is the root of human suffering. Here he states it plainly: everything conditioned, meaning everything made of causes and conditions, will pass, and wisdom means seeing this fact so clearly that the grasping mind finally relaxes. In the Eastern Wisdom tradition, impermanence is not a grim fact to endure but a doorway to freedom, practiced daily through noticing how thoughts arise and dissolve, how pleasure and pain both pass, how even the breath itself is never the same breath twice. The practice is simple and constant: watch things change, and let the watching loosen the grip.

Reflection

This verse points to seeing impermanence clearly as the doorway out of suffering. What am I holding onto today that would hurt less if I loosened my grip?
