The Wealth In One Bowl
The Master said, 'Admirable indeed is the virtue of Hui! With a single bamboo dish of rice, a single gourd dish of drink, and living in his mean narrow lane, while others could not have endured the distress, Hui did not allow his joy to be affected by it. Admirable indeed was the virtue of Hui!'
Confucius taught in the state of Lu during China's turbulent Spring and Autumn period, when rulers and scholars alike scrambled for office, land, and comfort. Here he praises his favorite disciple, Yan Hui, who lived on a single dish of rice and a gourd of water in a humble lane, yet whose joy never wavered. The passage shows that true richness is not measured by what fills the bowl but by an inner steadiness that circumstances cannot shake. In Confucian and broader Eastern thought, this is called an pin le dao — being at peace in poverty and delighting in the Way — the same root as knowing what is enough. The tradition trains this quality not through giving everything up but by redirecting attention from what is missing to what already suffices for a good life.
Reflection
Yan Hui's joy never wavered though his rice bowl and water gourd were nearly bare. What is one thing today I already have enough of?
