Above The Weather

You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather.

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche is a Tibetan meditation master trained in the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages who became known for pairing ancient practice with modern brain science. He wrote this book after taking part in studies at the University of Wisconsin measuring the effects of long-term meditators' minds, aiming to translate old teachings for a modern audience. Here he separates the vast, steady awareness of mind, the sky, from the thoughts, moods, and events that pass through it, the weather. The line teaches non-attachment: we can feel the wind and rain fully without believing they are all there is to us. In this tradition, non-attachment means caring about the weather deeply while resting in the sky that holds it, engaging with life without needing it to stay calm or turn out a certain way.

Reflection

Mingyur Rinpoche points to the vast sky beneath every passing storm of mood or circumstance. What can I engage with fully today while remembering I am not defined by how it turns out?
