Only The Seen

In reference to the seen, there will be only the seen; in reference to the heard, only the heard; in reference to the sensed, only the sensed; in reference to the cognized, only the cognized. That is how you should train yourself.

The wandering ascetic Bahiya begged the Buddha for guidance on the road in Savatthi, and rather than wait for a formal setting, the Buddha gave this teaching standing there, mid-alms-round. In it he strips perception down to its bare event: seeing is just seeing, hearing is just hearing, with no story, comparison, or self added on top. This is beginner's mind in its oldest form — meeting the coffee cup, the commute, the familiar face as raw sensation before the mind rushes in to label it. Eastern contemplative traditions treat this stripping-away not as a single insight but as an ongoing training, practiced fresh in each moment rather than mastered once. Bahiya, it's said, awakened on hearing it, a sign of how much ordinary experience is normally buried under commentary.

Reflection

Beginner's mind asks what changes when something familiar is met without the usual commentary. What is one ordinary thing today I can look at as if for the first time?
