Has a dog the Buddha-nature? This is the most urgent question of all.

— Wumen Huikai, The Gateless Gate

Wumen Huikai wrote this in 13th-century China, gathering koans into a collection meant to cut through comfortable thinking. The question about the dog came from a monk who wanted a straight answer about enlightenment, and Wumen used it to show that demanding straight answers is itself the problem. He spent years on this single question before breaking through, which tells you something real: transformation is not quick, and the confusion before clarity is not a detour. That confusion is the work, and most of our suffering comes from treating it like an obstacle instead.

Reflection

Think about a specific problem you keep trying to solve by thinking harder about it. What would happen if you sat with the question itself for one full week instead of searching for the answer?
