Morning Meditation

June 06, 2026

My religion is to live — and die — without regret.

— Milarepa, The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa

Milarepa sang these words after years of genuine hardship — he had practiced in freezing caves, worn nothing but a thin cotton robe, and eaten only nettles until his skin turned green. He was not performing contentment. He had simply stopped arguing with the conditions of his life and found that this, not comfort, was what freed him. For a morning practice, this is worth sitting with: acceptance in this tradition is not passive resignation but a deliberate choice to stop spending your energy fighting what is already true.

Reflection

Milarepa did not accept his circumstances by ignoring them — he looked at them directly and kept going. What is one specific thing in your life right now, a relationship, a job, a mistake, that you are still spending energy trying to undo in your mind?
