The real does not die, the unreal never lived." — Nisargadatta Maharaj, I Am That

Nisargadatta Maharaj was a Mumbai bidi seller who taught from a small loft above his shop, often speaking to seekers while rolling tobacco leaves. He said this to students who kept asking how to preserve or protect their spiritual progress. The worry behind that question is familiar: we accumulate practices, identities, and self-concepts, then scramble to maintain them. This line cuts straight through that effort by pointing out that anything requiring constant upkeep probably was not solid to begin with.

Reflection

Most people carry at least one belief about themselves that takes real work to keep alive. What is one story about who you are that you would have to stop defending if you simply let it rest?
